“Ignorant American – How dumb are they?”

We chose this article from the  weekly Newsweek magazine ( March 28 to April 4, 2011) written by Andrew Romano. He made a study/research about the “Ignorant American – How dumb are they?”.
One thousand  Americans were asked to answer to a United States of America citizenship test and 38 percent failed their answers. There were 5 categories for the ten questions: the American government, systems of government, rights and responsibilities.
In order to pass the test, they  needed to get at least six right questions.
Some examples of questions made, are “What is the economic system in United States of American?”( being the correct answer the capitalism, and only thirty-three percent scored while sixty-seven percent failed).
One more example of the questions asked was: “What ocean is on the West coast of United States of American?” ( the correct answer was the Pacific Ocean, and ninety-one percent scored, while nine percent failed).
In this study men hit sixty-seven percent of the correct answers, while women only hit fifty-eight percent.
Of the people who scored, seventy-five percent were rich and forty-one percent were "poor."

  1. In the UK we also have a citizenship test. But the questions (ok, some of the questions) are not things people need to know. And even intelligent Brits often don't know the answers. For example, how many Parliamentary constituencies are there. Is it the same in Portugal?
